So what do those # symbols really have to do with Twitter? Tweeter’s call these hashtags. They were invented by Twitter users as a way to search tweets.
How is this useful? Well let’s say you want to follow an event like say Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta, this years official hashtag is #40thFiesta, you would go to twitter.com/search enter #40thFiesta and now you can join the conversation.
How can a small business owner leverage this on your social web? You go a huge convention and search the event hashtag or tweet by adding a hashtag in your post. Now you can find people to “Follow” and people can find you…more followers to engage in your community. Or you promote an event and can find all the tweets on the social web.
